From Aspiration to Achievement: Guwahati Airport and the New Confidence of Assam

In today’s India, public aspirations are increasingly being translated into reality. The present government has demonstrated that governance can be responsive, decisive, and rooted in public will. In contrast, earlier times often compelled citizens to take to the streets in protest, only to see their demands overlooked by those in power.
On 29 December 2023, while passing through Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, a simple yet profound thought crossed my mind—will our Guwahati airport one day become equally beautiful and modern? That personal hope became a collective milestone on 20 December 2025, when the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
The new terminal is far more than an infrastructure upgrade. It is a reflection of Assam’s growing aspirations and the nation’s deepening trust in the Northeast. With state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced connectivity, the airport is now capable of handling over 1.25 crore passengers annually. This expansion is poised to significantly strengthen travel, tourism, trade, and economic opportunities, not only for Assam but for the entire region.
Improved air connectivity will greatly benefit pilgrims visiting Maa Kamakhya, researchers exploring the rich historical legacy of Sivasagar, and visitors eager to experience the unique culture and natural beauty of Majuli. Easier access will encourage cultural exchange, academic engagement, and sustainable tourism, thereby contributing to inclusive regional development.
At a time when the world looks towards India with renewed hope and confidence, the Northeast is emerging as the new sunrise of the nation’s future. Under the decisive and forward-looking leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also serves as the Convener of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the region is moving ahead with unity, clarity of purpose, and renewed momentum.
As a citizen of Assam, this moment inspires pride, reassurance, and optimism. It reinforces the belief that we are in safe and capable hands, and that the journey of progress for Assam and the Northeast has only just begun.
