A Development-Focused Milestone for the Northeast

Guwahati/Dibrugarh, December 2025:

The recent visit of PM Narendra Modi to Assam marked a significant phase in the state’s development trajectory, with the inauguration and launch of multiple infrastructure and industrial projects aimed at strengthening connectivity, boosting economic growth, and reinforcing Assam’s role as the gateway to Northeast India.

The visit reflected close coordination between the Centre and the Assam government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, underlining a shared vision of infrastructure-driven, inclusive development for the region.

Inauguration of the New Guwahati Airport Terminal

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The state-of-the-art terminal represents one of the largest aviation infrastructure upgrades in the Northeast and is designed to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity, travel comfort, and operational efficiency.

Built with modern amenities and incorporating design elements inspired by Assam’s cultural heritage, the new terminal is expected to handle a substantially higher volume of domestic and international passengers in the coming years. The expansion strengthens Guwahati’s position as the primary aviation hub of the Northeast, improving connectivity not only within India but also with neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia.

Development Projects Worth Thousands of Crores

Beyond the airport inauguration, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over ₹15,000 crore across various sectors in Assam. These projects span industrial development, energy security, connectivity, and public infrastructure, reflecting a comprehensive approach to regional growth.

Among the major initiatives was the foundation-laying of a large ammonia-urea fertiliser plant at Namrup in Dibrugarh district. This project is expected to enhance domestic fertiliser production capacity, support the agricultural economy of the Northeast, reduce import dependence, and generate significant employment opportunities.

Strengthening Connectivity: Roads, Railways, and Logistics

The Prime Minister’s visit also highlighted sustained investments in Assam’s road and railway infrastructure. Ongoing and completed projects under national highway expansion, bridge construction, and railway modernisation are improving inter-district and inter-state connectivity, reducing travel time, and facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.

Such connectivity initiatives are crucial for land-linked regions like the Northeast, enabling better access to markets, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, while supporting long-term economic integration with the rest of the country.

Focus on Education, Youth, and Social Development

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi also engaged with students under the Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative, interacting with young learners on issues related to examinations, stress management, and confidence building. The interaction reflected the government’s emphasis on nurturing youth potential alongside physical infrastructure development.

Additionally, the Prime Minister paid homage at the Swahid Smarak in Guwahati, acknowledging Assam’s historical legacy and the contributions of those who shaped the state’s identity.

Assam as the Gateway to the Northeast and Act East Vision

The projects inaugurated and reviewed during the visit align with India’s broader Act East Policy, positioning Assam as a strategic gateway connecting the Northeast with Southeast Asia. Improved airport capacity, road networks, industrial units, and logistics infrastructure are expected to catalyse trade, tourism, and cross-border economic engagement.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated that such infrastructure-led development is central to transforming Assam into a hub for investment, innovation, and regional cooperation, with tangible benefits for local communities.

A Forward-Looking Development Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam stands as a reaffirmation of long-term commitment to the state and the Northeast. From modern aviation infrastructure and industrial expansion to education, connectivity, and regional integration, the visit underscored a development-centric agenda focused on sustainability, opportunity, and inclusive growth.

As these projects move from inauguration to implementation, they are expected to play a transformative role in Assam’s economy, strengthen public infrastructure, and enhance the state’s contribution to India’s overall growth story.
